cny snack series

As I listened to the laborious effort that went to making Mama Fong's cute lil pillows of rolls, my thoughts (and mouthful of floss) came to a standstill. Here I was popping them in every 5 seconds without taking into the consideration of how much care went into each piece. I decided there and then I would savour every crunch and be reminded that I would not practice mindless consumption especially when it comes to Mama Fong's rolls. This got me thinking... my selection of CNY snacks ought to be celebrated! Every year only selected cookies / snacks make the cut (either ' cos they're way too yummy, to return a business favour or help a business in need) and they're made with so much love that I want people to know about them! Mucking about one CNY eve morning, I decided to do exercise my Vogue Summer Course-granted creative muscle with some flat-lay still-life styling :) Hope you enjoy the series...

Episode 1: Striking a balance between the pineapple and crust is the key to a good ‪pineapple tart‬. Ms Bulat's has the pineapple filling just nicely sweetened with a hint of tart, complimenting the buttery pastry. What's most delightful is that they look TOO CUTE for consumption I was fortunate to get the last box!

Episode 2: Snack of the year goes to ‪Mama Fong‬'s ‪mini floss rolls‬ made with utmost TLC you can taste the handmade love that went into every morsel. On 'rolling day', Mama Fong switches off her kitchen fan to ensure her popiah skins do not dry out. Her tedious production process is a testament to how dedicated she is to producing perfect lil rolls every time! Unfortunately (for you) Mama Fong will not be taking further orders (indefinitely!) as her current list is all stretched out.

Episode 3: Another winner is Chef Jenny's highly addictive better-than-crack ‪crabstick crackers‬ aka ‪seafood crackers‬. I've only discovered this last year and truly wonder ‪'wher-u-been-all-my-laif'‬. Chef Jenny has been known to peel each layer till her fingers turn blue! No added MSG.. just spectacular tasting on its own. This year Chef Jenny is not taking in commercial orders, better luck next year peeps!

Episode 4: What I absolutely love about ‪Kuih Bangkit‬ is that my Aunt Biau never fails to send me a bag of them every CNY. Such a doll-lah that lady! She used to make these melt-in-the-mouth treats in those hilarious animal shapes dotted with red eyes but now she sends me store-bought ones. Rest assured they are always Kelantan's finest!

Episode 5: Sweet dreams are made of these. Who am I to disagree? The bane of my (or perhaps more of my mum's) childhood... even though ‪Mamee Monster Noodle Snack‬ isn't as big or overtly MSG-laden as it used to be, it still makes a great snack (and travel-friendly munchies)! That and those bizarre ‪Dahfa‬ strips LOL! Couple them with some ‪Huey&Wah‬ ‪stout marshmallow-topped Milo and you're good to nap the evening away in a kampung hammock!
