#fwis / #ihavethisthingwithfloors tile collection: penang

penang 02

I try to visit local Kuan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) temples wherever I go. It's mainly due to a fortune reading I did years back that revealed (I only remember vaguely) my life's(?) affinity to the deity and that if I offered more prayers to her there would be more peace and goodness in my life. I'm all for more peace and goodness in my life!

This Goddess of Mercy temple also knows by the locals as 'Kuan Yin Teng' is the oldest Chinese temple in Penang said to be built in 1728. Kuan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) is probably the more notable of deities clad in her elegant white robe offering compassion and benevolence to her devotees.

Guy and I stopped to make a prayer. In our experience each temple may differ (in terms of number of joss sticks to be used and the prayer flow / direction) but temple go-ers are relatively helpful so just feel free to ask the aunties how to go about it. We were slightly worried someone was gonna steal our rented tandem bike so what we did was park our bicycle at one of those stalls (we chose the most busybody looking auntie seller) outside selling prayer amenities and bought a couple of lotus candles from her in exchange that she'd also watch our bike. Heh.

festival belia putrajaya 2015 #fbp2015

At the last hour I decided to accept JYi's invitation to pop over to Festival Belia Putrajaya 2015 for a mosey.

I had read on my Facebook feed that my homegirls Eats, Shoots and Roots will be hosting a Plant Mixology in collaboration with Dewakan so it was decided that that would be our first stop.

Snipping off some kemangi (lemon basil).

annual angie installation: happy mother's day 2015

As you know, (almost) every year (started here in 2009 and here's the last in 2014) I put up a birthday + Mother's Day installation and this year is no different albeit serba kekurangan.

There were NO flowers left post-mother's day which was a boo on my part but happy to know lotsa mummies got blooms this year. It was such a sad sight that the lone auntie in the cold room choosing flowers for a hand bouquet actually had to verbally express her frustration to me.  I absolutely empathized. I made do with whatever that was left: roses and lilies.

Also surprised her with the much coveted Chiffon Pink Le Creuset pot with a Feu de Touch Tocca candle as company. This year the theme is La Vie en Rose.

Pretty in pink! Surely even the humble Maggi Mee would taste gourmet in a pink pot?

Needless to say she enjoyed it thoroughly :) And that's all that matters.

Everything I am I owe it to my mother.
(Except the eyes. The eyes I got from Polkadotz Lens)

the generation that belongs nowhere (part 1?)

I never knew what Pan Mee was until I was 16. Seriously. I would see these stalls at the breakfast hawker centres (oh you know.. just your regular neighbourhood hawker centres or when I was young O&S. Yup O& fking S where you would wait half an hour to get a table and another half before your food would arrive. Sometimes the Loh Bak uncle would forget your order and you'd be waiting like a moron for something that was never going to come. I digress). Yes, so Pan Mee. Pan and mee. Noodle in a pan? Like fried noodles? I was always curious as to what they were but being a regular Chinese kid is pretty much eating whatever your mother orders you. You don't really question stuff when you're a child. I can probably understand where my mother was coming from with regards to her executive decisions when it came to ordering food. Finances were tight when the family was starting out so it made much more sense to always order the comfort food they know rather than take a chance of a dive into the unknown gastronomical abyss. I get that but boy was I missing out on the world.

coachella crushin'

Not crazy about the Coachella lineup but boy do I love the festival streetwear raining on the sunny meadows of California. So much bohemia in the air.. argh gerams especially this sparkling romper by Marina & The Diamonds and girl du jour Gigi Hadid! So obsessed with Gigi since she made first face on Max Mara NYFW Fall 2015 runway. I cannot imagine anyone else who would be this successful in emulating such Aphrodite-quality energy wrapped in a simple camel coat. I've not had a girl crush this heavy since Mirinda Kerr (pre Mrs Bloom). She is gorgeous, just gorgeous!

dewakan with chef darren teoh

This week has been filled with profound experiences, latest of which was my lunch at Dewakan today. This culinary gem showcases contemporary Malaysiana cuisine in the most curious location.. as all best-kept-secrets are, non? Hidden in a lil nook at KDU Glenmarie campus, they've just got their sign put up but it can be tricky for a newbie. It faces the open-air carpark if this tip makes it any easier.

Breadstick 'twigs' accompanied by budu mayo and cucur balls bathed in kerisik.

in tune and in heart

It was a bleak Monday morning.

I love bleak mornings, don't you? There's a certain charm to it... just beyond twilight, just before the piercing day sets in. I should be on my Macbook air typing out the analysis of my data collection for the one out of three thesis pending for submission at the end of this month but like every productive human on earth I'm scrolling through my Facebook feed. Pictures of babies being fed, ex-unimates hawking their Ponzi scheme disguised as a too-good-to-be-true-work-from-home-and-earn-thousands deals, personal anecdotes of how the newly-implied GST ruined their lives (I concur though), Monday blues picture quotes... in other words mundane, mundane and more mundane. That was until the video JHwei shared popped up as priority. Most probably due to the likes it was getting. I was going to pass on clicking 'play' except she said:

"When I saw her live in Singapore back in 2012, I haven't really broken into the album this song was from. She gave a bit of background of this song before she performed and I just fell in love the minute she started singing.
The song is about a girl finally being all the things he wanted her to be - but it all means nothing because he isn't around anymore. And she sings 'if only you / had found a way to love me for who I am / the way that I loved you'."

Something inside nudged me to move my Magic Mouse cursor towards the encapsulated white triangle. Perhaps it's because I trust JHwei's impeccable taste in music (especially indie) or maybe it's 'cos her name is Rachael. I've been discovering alot of talented Rachel / Rachaels lately.. like Rachel Khoo. She's sooo gorgeous and her petite apartment is such a darling. Her food tweaks are as adorable as her pigtails. Oops I digress.

penang 01

Penang has redeemed itself in my eyes and more. I had an awful experience the last time I was in that state about 4 years back and never returned until now. Even the seductive lure of viewing Ernest Zacharevic's murals was insufficient. That was till I received Isabella's wedding invitation who was a bridesmaid at my wedding. This time I figured I'd give Penang a second chance.

I've wanted to stay in Muntri Mews since 2011. I remember having read about Christopher Ong and his restoration efforts of a delipidated building into what he called a 'flashpacker's boutique hotel'. Fast forward 4 years later, Chris is now an award-winning hotelier with a string of highly-regarded establishments that followed Muntri Mews. I read some reviews on Agoda regarding the parking being a little tricky with regards to the hotel (if you're arriving by car). Yes and No.

Yes, tricky:
- The parking enforcement officers are sticklers with regards to parking tickets. I suggest you purchase a daily scratch ticket from Mews Cafe for RM6 which allows you to park everywhere else around Penang the entire day.
- There are peak moments when you can't get a parking close to the hotel and may have to park at streets afew blocks away. Mornings and late afternoons seem to be the least busy period. After we found a rockstar parking smack in front of Muntri Mews we pretty much left it there and did our exploration via foot.

No:
- You can find parking smack in front of the hotel.
- It's relatively safe.

Oh guess what? We got upgraded to Muntri Mews Residence, the newer building opposite the original Muntri Mews which hosts their suites. Such a great start to the break! Muntri Mews Residence has 3 enchanting outdoorsy courtyards fitted with antiques and vintage paraphernalia. Stepping into the residence I felt like an Edwardian Nyonya of the house. We were even greeted with a welcome tea in the most delightful vintage tea set. I was and still am amazed with the new life Chris had given all the vintage furniture pieces and his efforts of keeping the Peranakan ambience authentic. He's a visionary. Bravo Christopher bravo!

We got an upgrade wootwoot! Hoyeaaaah thank you Muntri Mews & Agoda :D Got 3 beds to myself.

Good morning Penang. Walking by this lovely sight towards breakfast sangat menyejukkan hati (cools the heart).

coca cola chicken

Alot of you may know that I'm abysmal in the kitchen. But I do, though, have a secret weapon. A weapon I use to, in a sense, woo my man, impress friends at potluck and surprise strangers with a conversational piece.

Everyone has a signature dish. Mine just happens to be Danni's :) Yes, Danni from college. Nobody said one's signature dish has to be one's invention / creation! Kan? So Danni Danni Danni... Danni from Beijing. She has many signature dishes but the one that really knocked my socks off was her Coca Cola Chicken! Come on even the name is strangely impressive. Memories of slaving over the stove in that minuscule kitchenette in Brighton comes flooding back. We used to have massive cookouts back in college.. so bloody Asian of us come to think of it XD

This was quite a success at a recent CNY potluck so I thought I'd share the joy. Read more for the recipe:

cny snack series

As I listened to the laborious effort that went to making Mama Fong's cute lil pillows of rolls, my thoughts (and mouthful of floss) came to a standstill. Here I was popping them in every 5 seconds without taking into the consideration of how much care went into each piece. I decided there and then I would savour every crunch and be reminded that I would not practice mindless consumption especially when it comes to Mama Fong's rolls. This got me thinking... my selection of CNY snacks ought to be celebrated! Every year only selected cookies / snacks make the cut (either ' cos they're way too yummy, to return a business favour or help a business in need) and they're made with so much love that I want people to know about them! Mucking about one CNY eve morning, I decided to do exercise my Vogue Summer Course-granted creative muscle with some flat-lay still-life styling :) Hope you enjoy the series...

Episode 1: Striking a balance between the pineapple and crust is the key to a good ‪pineapple tart‬. Ms Bulat's has the pineapple filling just nicely sweetened with a hint of tart, complimenting the buttery pastry. What's most delightful is that they look TOO CUTE for consumption I was fortunate to get the last box!

giveaway: eats, shoots and roots

I am so in awe of the people behind Eats, Shoots and Roots. I've always known of them. I follow the company on Instagram: @eatsshootsandroots and have always thought of dropping by the garden. I am so in awe of their concept to educate people about urban farming / agriculture so they can be empowered to be self-sustainable. Aargh how fantastic is that??

fig, vanilla bean and cardamom infused vodka

I stumbled upon Tasty Yummies infused vodka recipe while searching on Pinterest for ideas to put my spare cardamom pods to good use and have always kept it on the back burner (aka an open safari window on the iPhone) until today. Because today I found FIGS! At Village Grocer, Bangsar Village. It's so exhilarating to find that one rare (in Malaysia fresh figs are almost unheard of) key ingredient to that recipe you're itching to try. I'm sure you share my thrill :) Continue after the jump...

hold up, a couple of makeup beauty tips s'il vous plait

If you see me alot you will realize that my make-up is pretty much the simple few รก la Taylor Swift. That eyeliner couple with a hint of blush and a statement lip shade. Occasionally I tweak the flicks and go nude on the lipstick just to give my look an edge.

I've always been very curious about smokey-eyes but have always been abysmal at it. To compensate my #fail ability to smudge, I create drama with an eyeline-ah! I like to use Alexa Chung Lash Enhancing Eye Do Eyeliner by Eyeko. The precision tip pleases me and it stays put even through sad Youtube shorts (films)

a sip of mint julep... in winter

My sister was lamenting about how vicious the Austrian winter has been to her skin and showed me her scaly shins with terrible scratch marks. Having seen that I could imagine the nippings Jack Frost must have made to her nails. I immediately got set to making her some Christmas Lotion Pops and Cuticle Kiss. As I waited for the balms to set, I peered down to my toes and was alarmed by how autumn my nails looked! Time to frost it up with some tips from Julep:
