kota bharu kelantan eats: Berek 12 Pulut Cendol / Restoran Sin Nam Hin / Nasi Kukus Tok Kapur / White House / Nasi Sup Tok Ayah

This is a tribute to Dddy. The die-hard Kelantan boy.

It's always been his wish for me to do a feature on Kelantan eats. We were back for Chap Goh Meh on a daystripper and it was more of a food-fest than a family reunion.

Our first stop was to cool off with some pulut cendol over at Berek 12. I have a problem acclimatizing to cendol outside of Kelantan because I'm so used to cendol coming with pulut (with the occasional tapai - fermented sweet potato.. woi woi don't hate it 'till you've tried it) that people in KL give me the quizzical 0_0 look when I go, "Pulut cendol satu!" In Kelantan cendol's pretty much a rainbow and notoriously sweet. Yum.

Zakini Nasi Kukus right opposite is popular for its Nasi Kerabu. It was closed when we were there.

We then dropped by Dddy's ultimate hangout. Probably the Kelantan version of a sports bar, Irish pub or American coffee joint. All he had to do was sit there and suddenly his gang would turn up. They'd share the town's gossip and have a jolly chat. It's nice to see Dddy so happy. This is his Central Perk.

Dddy insisted I took pictures of the vintage bamboo blinds that belongs to Queen, a hairdressing school still in service since Dddy was just a kid. He was pointing to a building where he had his first fight as a kid. It was a hilarious anecdote.

Dddy proudly exclaims that this kopitiam serves the best coffee in Kota Bharu but then again he may be bias.

This is my MahMah. She's a doll!

This is not my favourite nasi kukus joint but it's Mmmy's.

It's a big ass kuali to fry approximately 50 pieces of chicken per round. The smell of sizzling chicken skin is intoxicating.

Mmmy's fave: pajeri nenas.

Everyone tucks in. Look-lah at my parents and how gelojoh they are.

Tons of nasi being steamed.

Kota Bharu ritual: a visit to Kamdar.

I've been coming here since I was born. That's 30 years and the place, though aging, shows no signs of stopping. It's now run by his daughter but the uncle in the grey bush jacket is still here and grouchy as always. No food pictures as photo-taking is prohibited but their eggs are wonderful and the kaya is to-die-for! They have tasty nasi himpit and the parentsl units adore the tea there. MUST GO.

I've never truly understood the point of Pintu Gerbang Kota Sultan Ismail but it makes for a very easy landmark.

(Woot woot) Istana Jahar, Royal Ceremonies Museum.

I leave you with the piéce de résistance of my personal favourite Kota Bharu meal and that's Tok Ayah's sup tulang. It's yummy as hell and I eat here every lunch when I'm back. He's seen me slurping his soup when I was in primary school and here I am FAT as a cow and a medical officer *giggle*.

Nasi Sup Tok Ayah is the BEST. I wish you could've had the sup tulang when his stall was by the Kelantan River before things got flooded down there and he had to move his stall here instead. It still tastes just as good.
