bon yum-yum: la cocina / rakuzen

(very late entry)

I was looking for an alternative place to satisfy my paella whim when Dddy pointed out a new Spanish place in town. Turns out it wasn’t really all that new but I figured I’d give it a try ‘cos La Bodega can’t be, like, the only place for tapas rite?? Called Miss ChewChew to bring her loverboy Ah Tric along so I could finally meet him in person. He’s a darling and we spent the entire night having tech talk.

This goat cheese starter is DA BOMB. I ordered this twice!

I ordered the wrong paella! I didn’t read it right and ordered it squid-inked. Crap. I like my paella saffron like a pile of hay on fire! Stupid stupid stupid me.

The food is OK. Average really. A lil’ too far into Taipan for 2nd visit worthy.

Brief detour:
Was browsing through Plaza Damas' X'mas market and found...

OMG. Hello Kitty fishing game! 2 of my favourite elements combined :)

Isn’t this cuh-razy? A Barbie doctor’s set! There’s even a pink plastic kidney dish. Cute!

Another good Jap place you need reservation for is:

They even serve puffer-fish (blowfish) sashimi.
Now… puffer-fish sashimi is no Kellogg’s cornflakes. It takes a really skilled sashimi chef to prepare the puffer-fish in such a way that the poison from it’s ‘thorns’ does not contaminate the meat enough to kill the eater yet just enough to provide the kick (in the form of tongue numbing). It’s quite a challenge really.. putting your life on the line over sashimi. Miss BellaBella and I were this close to sharing a plate but we figured ‘twas abit too expensive. Really, we were just too chicken. Death by raw fish ain’t the way to die… yet!
One thing I realized… the place has mirrors everywhere..!
At the sides..

On top..

Whoah yeah on top! Kinky Japanese people and their restaurants :P Me likes *giggle*

I ordered the Nabeyaki Udon to Temaki Zen set. Very taiii… RM38 for the whole lot. Oishi..!!

ah preet is now a mr of a mrs

Despite my vapid lifestyle and ridiculous schedule I really made myself available for Ah Preet’s wedding.

Mostly because we have gotten to be pretty close colleagues in the few months but even more because of the tale of Ah Preet and his now wife. Won't bore you with details. The point was the good girl finished first. And good girls hardly win. I'm a good girl so let's just say it amp-ed my inspiration. OK-lah his wife is a gorgeous version of a good girl but let’s not stray from the fact that she’s a good girl mah… So I went and had a lot of his good red wine. Of which I shouldn’t.. ‘cos I was due to drive back to TI afew hours later. Well you know my penchant for good wine.

(L-R) Surgical colleagues + boss: Dr Miss NirNir, Dr Ah Dara, Dr Miss MeeMee (small boss)

My laku sari did NOT fail me again! I’m telling you this sari really works… remember the last time? Anywayyy this time around, the moment I walked into the banquet hall lobby a nice, old Indian man came up to me…

Nice, old Indian man: Are you Indian or Chinese??
moi: Uh.. excuse me?
Nice old Indian man’s wife: *popped outta nowhere and picks my necklace up from my nonexistent clavicle notch*
moi: Chinese *feeling very odd with physical contact from strangers*
Nice old Indian man’s wife: Of course she’s Chinese… look at her name. This is not an Indian name.
Nice, old Indian man: ‘cos you walked in with the sari and I was wondering..
[further small talk ensued]
Nice, old Indian man: Come join us at our table..
moi: Oh no I already have a place but thank you *quickly takes leave*

Lookey-lookey.. guess who joined in the matrimonial fun: my ever favourite couple-colleague Ah Jeet and Miss MilaMila. Well obviously they’re gonna be there.. they’re Sikh and it’s a Sikh wedding and all Sikhs know each other!

We sweet girls, non?

Umm... needless to say I was umm.. abit late for work the next day *shy* Well doctors need to have a bit of a laugh too sometimes :P

my many days of xmas '08

(very, very late entry)

This is so belated I can’t even imagine my excuse. Ya ampun.

Ah Seng whipped up a festive surprise which was really a berry sweet!

Ah Seng's version of halal Blue Lagoon.

… with Steawbeeries. You definitely can’t get those in KL for sure!

Ah Seng's earnest attempt of an X'mas ambience. Umm...

This is Ah Seng on an X'mas culinary high: Voila!! Steawbeery Blue Lagoons and chocolate wantons. Ah Seng got so excited and left the stove on. Next thing we knew the room fogged up with burnt chocolate smoke :P

Ah Seng: Can I open my present now pleaseeee??
moi: It’s not even X’mas!
Ah Seng: You mean I gotta wait all the way to X’mas??
moi: Well that’s the tradition innit?!

I had to relent ‘cos he looked at me with the most keh-lian look ever. It was amusing seeing a 27-year umm.. man getting excited over unwrapping a gift.

Xmas Eve
Oooh gift-exchange session: my favourite time of the year!! *beams* Sifu David Tutera would be so so proud. So proud! I really outdid myself this year. Take a load of the gingerbread man – candy cane combo. I really ought wrapped a gift for myself!

We were so so late…we missed our table reservations and had to settle for a garden space but that turned out to be pretty cosy.

The wine selection there is excellent. Only RM15 per glass for really good table white. Needless to say we had a lot!

Xmas Countdown

We headed to Quattro, the supposedly new hip 4-seasons club, to give our old bones abit of a rattle!

We got really fun party packs with clapping rattles and blinking blue (LED) shot glass chains.

I like that we get to see the face of KL city from inside. I can’t really conclude if I liked the club or not. I don’t think I picked a god time worthy of evaluation. It was too crowded, it being X’mas and all, too young and too umm… Ah Beng (if that’s even an adjective). But Miss ChewChew claims it’s really quite good on a normal Friday night. I’ll try it then and will let you know.

Xmas Day

We don’t have an X’mas tree. We have an X’mas wreath!! Weee!! Look what Santa laid out for us. So fun right??

Dddy had to dash off somewhere for a club meeting so I brought the family for a nice breakfast at Marmalade. Sophiekins had poached eggs which are really:
Wikipedia: A poached egg is an egg that has been cooked by poaching, that is, in water. No oil or fat is used in its preparation. Poached eggs are used in Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine.
I seriously never knew! Poached eggs are super cutes!!

Xmas Night Dinner

Hidden in a nook of the city surrounded by lush greens, it really felt, even though very briefly, like I was clickety-clacking my French (OK I’m lying: Italian really) heels into a chic Parisian restaurant.

I had reserved a table before hand and their selection was magnefique. A quaint table by the window… c’est bonne!!

Price is steep but it’s such a brilliant place with excellent interiors. They really kept it as authentic as they could. The rustic French tables and chandeliers. I got prohibited from taking pictures after that but their foie gras: divine!

I did though take a picture of our chocolate cake which I added carvings of our family names. Cute rite? It’s like the Kho family cake.

Now if you’re thinking of taking your date / girlfriend / fiancée / wife (no slutty concubines allowed) to a lovely French restaurant so that she’ll absolutely fall in love with you (or again for that matter) this is the place! Even the parentals thought the food was really really good. And these are the people who thinks good food are either Chinese or Kelantanese and occasionally mamak!
